>>>I recently bought a copy of lightwave secondhand. I got the dongle, so it
works, but I didn't get the manual and the guy I bought it from sold the
manualto someone else (grr) so I have some questions that are probably in the
manual but, since I don't have one...
You shouldn't have done that (I mean, buying the prg without the precious
manual).
>>1. How do you get surfaces and colors on objects to stay there? I've tried
while making the object (using the option to rename surface) and in the
polygonmenu to apply the surface, but when I get to rendering (ya, real slow
but at least it works) the surfaces never show up. Is there a separate prg for
making
Give surface names to the object(s) in modeler. Save it (or export it directly
into layout). Go into Layout.
Load the object into the scene (if you exported it it's already there ;) ).
Go to the Surfaces menu. Choose the desired surface (you can use the up/down
cursor keys to do this kind of selection and many others in layout - objects,
lights, images...). Change the color or apply a texture map to the surface(s).
Do a preview of your scene NOW to see if the color/surface is OK - use the
Camera menu to change the resolution to 'Hiper-Ultra-Super-LOW-RES' :) .
If you want to see a specific region of your object/image with higher detail,
go to the Layout main screen and press 'l'. A box should appear. You can
resize it or move it around with the mouse WHILE pressing 'l'. When you want
dodesactivate this function, go to the camera menu and press the 'Limited
Region ' button. This should solve your 'low speed' problems (SLOW?! What
computer are you using?!)
I forgot to tell you that to apply an image to a surface, you have to load the
image FIRST in the Images menu.
Now, when you are pleased with your object attributes, you HAVE TO SAVE IT
AGAIN. The best way to do it is 'Save All Objects' in the Objects menu. Of
course that if you want to have the same modeled object in diferent scenes
with DIFERENT SURFACES/COLORS, you have to save several versions of the
object. The reason to do this is because the 'Save Scene' only saves the
position of objects/lights/camera..., the motions paths and some more things,
but not the objects attributes... This is a characteristic of the object.
I think that's it... I hope that you will purchase the next version of LW WITH
manual ;)
>2. To make an engine on a spaceship, do you have to stuff a light in there or
is there another way? And will turning up the fog level make the light look
like an engine exhaust?
You can put a light in there and turn on 'lens flare'. I never experimented
much with 'fog' so I can't tell anything about that. You can use also a cone
or oval object with transparence edge on and some textures that can simulate
fire. For more information read the Lightwave PRO magazine (February) that has
a tutorial on how to make comets/fireballs. I guess it's good for engine fire
too.
